The story begins with Ed Whitehead, who spent more than 25 years managing Brown Tire Company before striking out on his own. In 1998 he and his partner Howard Fleischmann opened their first tire shop in Yuma, Arizona. The leap was anything but easy. Ed had grown up working at his brother’s Texaco station in tiny Stanfield, Arizona, a place so small John Wayne himself was a familiar face at the pump. Ed even worked at John Wayne’s Red River Ranch as a young man, an early lesson in grit and responsibility that would shape his career for decades to come.
That same spirit carried through to the next generation. Tim Whitehead grew up sweeping shops, patching tubes, and pulling valve stems under the scorching Arizona sun. By 19, fresh out of high school, he was charged with cleaning and reopening the Wellton Tire Repair Shop, transforming a dusty old building, once even used as a library, into a functioning tire shop. “It was snakes, dirt, and heat all day,” Tim recalls. “But that is what built me.” Those long days and tough lessons forged his work ethic and prepared him to eventually lead operations across all four stores.
Today, Tim serves as general manager, working side by side with his sister Shandy, who runs the business office and keeps the books. Together with their father Ed, still active in both the shops and his aviation school, the Whitehead family demonstrates the kind of teamwork and accountability that makes customers feel they are in good hands. It is not uncommon for customers to see a familiar face when they walk in, someone they know from the community, and that recognition builds an immediate sense of trust.
