Why Raise a Hood Recommends

image

Erik Dutcher opened D&D Autoworks more than 40 years ago, fresh out of trade school, with a simple goal: build an auto repair shop people could trust. Four decades later, that philosophy continues to define the shop’s reputation in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

“I don’t want to be the biggest shop,” Dutcher says. “I just want to be the one people trust.”

That mindset has earned D&D Autoworks a loyal, multi generation customer base in an industry where confidence is often hard to come by. The shop does little traditional advertising and relies largely on referrals from customers who return year after year, often bringing family members with them. Many drivers in St. Louis Park and the surrounding Twin Cities area view the shop as their long term solution for car repair and maintenance.

D&D Autoworks was the first auto repair shop in Minnesota to pass Raise a Hood’s certification program, an independent evaluation covering 36 categories including diagnostic accuracy, estimate transparency, repair recommendations, and customer communication. The certification focuses on how repair decisions are made and how clearly they are explained to customers.

During a routine Raise a Hood evaluation, staff observed Dutcher advising a customer not to proceed with repairs. The vehicle needed work that would have cost nearly as much as it was worth. Instead of recommending the repair, he suggested the customer save their money and consider replacing the car.

The exchange was direct and unembellished. It was not framed as a sales tactic. It was framed as honest advice.

That interaction reflects how D&D Autoworks approaches automotive repair every day. Vehicles are evaluated carefully, and recommendations are based on what makes sense for the customer, not what produces the largest invoice. Each car is treated the same way regardless of make, model, or owner.

“Every car deserves to be done right,” Dutcher says. “That’s what keeps people coming back.”

While the shop’s approach is grounded in decades of hands on experience, it has made small changes to help customers feel more informed before they arrive. Some customers now choose to share vehicle symptoms or concerns in advance through their free online diagnostic tool, which can help set expectations before the first conversation takes place. These tools are intended to support clearer communication, not replace professional diagnostics or the judgment of an experienced mechanic.

The result is often a more productive discussion when customers arrive at the shop, with fewer surprises and a clearer understanding of what may or may not make sense to fix.

Scheduling an appointment at D&D Autoworks often requires waiting a week or more, a reflection of a shop with steady demand and limited service bays. The work is never rushed, and the focus remains on quality and consistency. The facility itself is clean and functional, not designed for showroom appeal, but for diagnosing problems accurately and fixing vehicles properly.

For many drivers seeking a trusted auto repair shop in St. Louis Park, that trade off is exactly what they value.
